Hodges is the U.S. Supreme Court landmark case decided in June 2015 in which the Court held that the 14th Amendment requires states to license and recognize same-sex marriage.Justice Kennedy delivered the opinion. The opinion states that affirming same-sex marriage is based on four underlying principles. Here’s the quote: “Four principles and traditions demonstrate that the reasons marriage is fundamental under the Constitution apply with equal force to same-sex couples.”The entire opinion is 103 pages, but the Syllabus is about 5 pages. The Syllabus describes in a nutshell Justice Kennedy’s four principles and traditions and then sends us to the pages in the opinion where we can read more about each one.
