Are law enforcement cameras an invasion of privacy?
Law enforcement cameras are put in place in order to record and monitor any potential criminal activity. However their usage has been widely criticized due to privacy concerns over the last few years. Security cameras can prove to be beneficial in dealing with crimes. For example the usage of camera feed in 150 feet radius of any 911 call in Chicago helps in examining the operator in examining the scene (Morarity). However such surveillance can also potentially lead to an invasion of privacy. This paper argues that the unregulated usage of security cameras poses a threat of possible invasion of privacy at both personal and institutional levels.
First of all the misuse of law enforcement cameras by the operators at a personal level is not only possible it has happened in the past. There have been multiple instances of security officials using security cameras for personal reason and invading the privacy of other people. For example NSA officials were found to be using security cameras to spy on their potential and former love interests (Gorman). Also there are very limited ways to detect such malicious use and procedures need to be in place that can detect and report such misuse whenever it occurs.
Secondly security agencies have also been guilty of illegal surveillance in the past targeting the opponents of established systems. Such misuse poses a graver threat to the public safety and must be avoided. One such example is the controversial and political role of FBI in series of covert and illegal operations called COINTELPRO (Marcetic). Without checks an agency with such history can misuse the power provided by mass surveillance to great lengths.
In conclusion a tool that has the ability of potentially tracking the movements of a person without their knowledge is bound to raise privacy concerns. It cannot be denied that security cameras do help in recognition and intervention of various criminal activities but the need to regulate this usage just like audio-taping regulations is needed so that the misuse of system can be avoided.
