These are short recordings where as I promised I provide more details and clarifications on the six curriculum design principles I want to concentrate on.
1.IntroductionUnit4.m4a [.55secs] Principles for Organizing the Curriculum [26 min mark to 44 minute mark of Curr. Video]
Transcript:
Im going to address and clarify some of the material in this unit a little further. As you may have deduced many of these concepts are in ebb and flow. Curriculum experts define and develop deeper explanations and rationales for concepts. In this case the terms Horizontal and Vertical Curriculum are employed in both how curriculum is organized and aligned at micro and macro levels. Vertical can be seen used to describe organizational plans that look at curriculum from a vertical framework grade to grade year to year elementary through high school etc. As you can see that already implies ideas about time and simple to complex. Yet on a macro level the same understanding can be applied vertically aligning curriculum from basic classroom level to standards and expectations (classroom to district to state). Similarly Horizontal includes organizational schemes that look at curriculum on horizontal spaces. In this instance we look at within grade level organizing across subjects within grade level course to course comparisons and again alignment to standards at grade level. For instance how do courses at Grade 3 align to Grade 3 Standards?

*Unit 4: Curriculum Design Design Principles/Organization & Types
Objective:
Understand importance of curriculum structure design types and organizing principles.
Scope Sequence Continuity Articulation Balance Spiraling (organizing or design principles) andDesign Types are further explained below. I have provided Instructor Recordings to make some distinctions or clarifications from the video.
Design Types: Academic Discipline Broad-Field Correlation Process Learner-Centered (Radical Humanistic Problem-Centered)
Activities:
*Complete Curriculum Design Video Part III. concentrating on design principles [30 min mark to 44 min mark].
*Be familiar with some of the Design Types listed above [Also in video 44 min. mark to 60min.]
*Listen to Instructor Recordings on Organizational Principles of Curriculum [In this unit folder].
*Complete Paper 2.
*Complete DF in which you share what Option you are contemplating or have decided to work on for Finals. In other words describe your final project and we will give you some feedback. Feel free to solicit ideas by asking specific questions of the class.
Paper 2 Prompt:
Why is curriculum structure important? Respond fully explaining the 6 types of design principles listed above and citing examples of at last three principles from the documents you analyzed/compared in Unit 3.
